The term “barbarian” still stirs up images of a young, buff Arnold Schwarzenegger brandishing a broadsword (no? Just me?). But a San Diego quintet going by Barbarian is changing that image, conjuring up feelings more akin to hazy, sun-drenched drives down West Coast highways. Their November 2012 debut single, “Daze of Youth”, came right out of a coastal garage, smothered in a psychedelic sheen, and the band hones their sound even further on their upcoming EP, City of Women……

Minneapolis trio Is/Is aren’t any old dreampop band and they want you to know it. Made up of Sarah Rose, Sarah Nienaber, and Ronnie Lee, the sweetly droned group, on its latest 7″ untitled release, prove that shoegazey melodies and swaths of shimmery guitars don’t have to be shy at all. With the power and pulse of Rose’s singing voice, and the committment to have a sound that stays firmly planted in the foreground, Is/Is are destined for a lifelong adoration from fans of the hi-fi. The 7″ follows a debut LP entitled III, released under Minneapolis label Guilt Ridden Pop, and will preclude an EP release this summer on Manimal Vinyl.
Texas musician Lauren Green’s psychedelic, shoegaze-y solo project, simply called LRN GRN, is about to release a new EP on Manimal subsidiary Loose Recordings. Her fresh single, “Imagined Pontoon,” is a three-minute slice of a daydream, crafted from clouds, cooing, pretty vocals, and a Twin Peaks synth beat.
